The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to contest certain decisions made by the official, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
