Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
