Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
